Trident Maple

Trident maple

Trident Maple presents a natural straight shape and stands quite well pruning, dry soil and pollution. For these reasons it is used in many countries in the world as "urban tree". The same characteristics make it suitable for bonsai growing. An unusual cultivar for bonsai is Acer b. "Mino Yatsubusa", a dwarf variety with thick and glittering foliage which changes into bright orange and red in autumn. Acer ginnala, Amur Maple, represents a good choice for cold climate regions, as its roots are more resistant to frost.

Exposure
Exposure

Sunlight. Because of their great humidity, roots are sensible to frost and need to be sheltered during winter.

Watering
Watering

Everyday, in the vegetative season. In winter let the soil be relatively dry to reduce the damages caused by the frost.

Fertilizing
Fertilizing

Every week during the first month of leave growing; later every fortnight, up to deep summer.

Repotting
Repotting

Every year, at the beginning of spring, just before the opening of the buds. Shorten the parts damaged by the frost to the oldest wooden roots: the new ones will form very rapidly. Use mould with a good drainage.

Pruning
Pruning

Shorten the growth to 1-2 leave buds. By mid-summer it is possible to trim completely the very strong specimens.

Propagation
Propagation

By seeds in high autumn, shelter from the frost. By semi-wood cuttings in deep summer. At the end of winter, you can plant wood cuttings in fine sand. By layers in spring.

Bonsai styles

Suitable for every style and for all sizes. The root-ball, very ramified, makes it perfect for Root over Rock style.
