Under 8 Indoor hurling county champions 1998 |
The 1998 / 99 school year began with Geevagh National School
defending Nine titles: (See roll of honour) Cumann na mBunscoil,
hurling and camogie; Mini 7s camogie; Cumann na mBunscoil, girls football,
basketball; U8 County Championship hurling, County Sligo boys and girls cross country and
Connaught boys cross country.The cross-country competition began early in the first term.
Reigning boys provincial champions Geevagh defended their county title in great
style by claiming the individual and team events. The girls team were edged out of
the gold medal position by a single point but also qualified for the Connaught
Championship in their county title in great style by claiming the individual and
team events.

The girls team were edged out of the gold medal position by a
single point but also qualified for the Connaught Championship in Claremorris. In
Claremorris both teams performed heroically. The boys claimed the silver medal and the
girls finished fourth. Jason Gilmartin crowned a great day for the school by winning the
gold medal in the individual event. Two super - fit teams then turned their attention to
the hurling and camogie championships. Both teams brushed aside all opposition and
qualified for the finals in Ransboro. The girls retained their title by defeating old
rivals, Cloonacool while the boys, by beating Rathlee, became the first school to win the
competition three years in a row.
