STATE OF THE ART MEDICAL CENTRE PLANNED FOR GREAT ISLAND
Planning permission is being sought for a new Primary Care Medical Centre at Ticknock, Cobh.
Alpha Healthcare in conjunction with Castlelands Construction will spearhead the project which will include a GP medical facility for Dr Paul McDonald and Dr Una O’Halloran, a HSE medical facility, four medical support units and four bookable rooms.
The centre will also house a UCC Continued Medical Education centre, and Professor Colin Bradley, Chair of General Practice at UCC will be associated with this aspect of the project.
Cobh Medical Centre patients will be familiar with Professor Bradley, who, along with his Medical Students, attends the centre on a regular basis.
Dr. Paul McDonald is very enthusiastic about the project and outlined the benefits the proposed centre will bring to the community:
"We at the Medical Centre believe that a Primary Care Centre would be of enormous benefit to the Cobh community. The idea is to offer better, new and more varied services to you, the patient. Development of this centre means that we can offer these services in a modern, custom-designed space but with all you have come to expect from us and everyone who works in the practice - warmth, personal attention, care and discretion”. Mulvihill calls for base line health study for Cobh
Cllr John Mulvihill Jnr is calling for the Minister for the Environment to carry out a base line health study of Cobh and the lower harbour area. Referring to figures obtained from the national cancer registry which indicate a high level of cancer diagnoses in Cobh town 30% higher that the national average.
The figures indicate that 222 people were diagnosed with cancer in the town of Cobh from the period 2001-2007. These figures mean that every eleven days over that period someone was diagnosed with cancer in the town of Cobh.
If you look at the combined figures over the period from 1994-2007 it indicates that 433 cases were diagnosed in the town of Cobh.“While I am conscious that we are in tight financial circumstances the cost of this study would be worth every cent it would cost.
The people of Cobh need to have questions answered, I am now calling on the Minister to secure funding without further delay. What we are dealing with here are peoples mothers, fathers, sons and daughters the figures I produce are real people.
In the town of Cobh we have had the dark cloud of the former Irish Steel site hanging over the town for many years, the government is only now in the process of setting up a committee to draw up a plan to deal with the site.
It is now 579 days since the story broke and the government is only now dealing with the issue, unfortunately it appears that a base line health study will not be part of the issues the committee will deal with.
The least the people of Cobh and lower harbour area need is clarification as to why there is a high level of cancer in the harbour area.”
Councillor Mulvihill stated.

COBH HOCKEY CLUB
It was Cup weekend for the Cobh Club last week and both teams advanced to the next round.
Div 4 had a fine 3-1 win over Mallow and Div 6 got the better of Dungarvan by 2-0. Div 4 went 1-0 up after about 10 minutes when a sideline hit by Aoife Richardson came to Fiona O'Regan who pushed the ball to Katie Murphy to sweep to the net. Cobh were dominant for most of the game with some fine runs by Aoife Hart but could not put the ball in the net. They finally broke through again in the second half when Mari Moynihan made no mistake with a fine shot to the net. Katie Murphy made it 3-0 with about 10 minutes remaining and just before the end Mallow pulled one back. Cobh play Church of Ireland in the next round.
Div 6 took on Dungarvan and this was a more evenly matched game. It was after about 20 minutes that Cobh opened the scoring when Clodagh Feenhan took a quick free and caught the Dungarvan defenders with a shot. It was the second half before Cobh could score again when a nice move involving Caroline Green and Sonia Brady saw the ball come to Lisa Harris who pushed the ball to the net. Fixtures: Sat 6/2/09 Div 6 League Dungarvan v Cobh, 12.45, Dungarvan and Sun 7/2/09 Div 4 Cobh v Tipperary, Midleton, 12.30.
The Club would like to congratulate Lisa Harris and Kevin O'Keeffe on their recent engagement and wish them all the best in the future.
