MUCH LOVED TEACHER RETIRES
Mrs Christine Burke retired recently following an illustrious career as a Primary Teacher.
Christine’s teaching ability and caring nature endeared her to the many children she taught during her years at St Mary’s National School. At the beginning of each year pupils eagerly hoped they would be lucky enough to have Mrs Burke as their teacher, because her teaching method was one of learning through fun which reaped great rewards and gave each student a sense of self worth and a love of knowledge gathering.
Her enthusiasm was infectious and she made every subject interesting which encouraged the pupils to pay attention.Christine was involved in all aspects of school life, but in the creative and theatrical fields she shone like a beacon.
She used her own immense talent to nurture each child and give them confidence in their own ability. Many youngsters discovered their talents in her classroom and continue to have a great love of theatre and the arts as a result.
In recent years she brought a new dimension to her vast repertoire and introduced her pupils to the Italian language, again through play, art, music and acting.
She was a holistic educator in the truest sense of the word and the success of her many pupils is a testament to her wonderful teaching methods.
Christine, we wish you every happiness in your retirement and, no doubt, you will now have time to put those wonderful talents to good use in the community of Great Island.     Mary O’Connor

COBH ORGANISATION OF EX-SERVICEMEN & WOMEN
Members of the Cobh Branch of the Organisation of Ex-Servicemen & Women paid their annual visit to Cobh Hospital over the Christmas period.
The staff and patients are always delighted with the visit and it is one of the Branch members most enjoyable engagements.
The members of Cobh ONE play an invaluable part in many aspects of community life on Great Island, their contribution to local charities as collectors is immense and their ability to bring an air of pomp and circumstance to many public events is legendary.
The Cobh Branch received a wonderful start to the New Year - an invitation, the first in the branch’s history, to visit the Lord Mayor of Cork at the City Hall. The branch members were all welcomed very warmly by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Terry Shannon and made to feel very much at home. They were pleasantly surprised at his knowledge of the O.N.E. and its charitable work for the benefit of Ex-Service Personnel who have fallen on hard times. The Lord Mayor praised them for their work in this regard.Lord Mayor Shannon briefed the visitors on the history of the building, the Mayoral Chain of Office and other valuable historical items associated with this high office. He then proceeded to give them a tour of the City Hall.To mark the occasion, the branch presented the Mayor with a suitably engraved Celtic Crystal piece. In return the Lord Mayor presented each member with a lovely memento of their visit and each one got to sign the visitors’ book. The branch members thoroughly enjoyed the visit and were full of praise for the Lord Mayor and his endeavour to make their visit such a memorable one for them.

GREAT ISLAND 10 MILE ROAD RACE
The third annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ takes place on 15 April 2012 at 10.30am. and once again it is being arranged for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society and for Palliative Care in particular. This year we expect up to 500 runners to charge through the streets and roads of Cobh and the Great Island for this worthy cause. A 5k walk will also take place leaving from the Community Centre on Top of the Hill at 10am. Both events will finish at the GPO.The feedback from those taking part over the last couple of years has been extremely positive and reflects very favourably on the race itself, the scenery that Cobh has to offer and the support the runners receive from local residents. All this has combined to make this event a very enjoyable experience for all involved. The object of the exercise is to raise as much money as possible to ensure that the Palliative Care service is available for those unfortunate enough to need it. And need it we will!Palliative care offers cancer sufferers the opportunity to spend their remaining time in the relative comfort of their own homes surrounded by those they love while ensuring them the dignity and privacy that only a home can offer. It is impossible to put a price on such a service – and it’s free. To ensure the availability of this service come out and support the event! Run, walk, help with stewarding or share your talent with us. Sponsorship cards are available from sonyaomurphy@gmail.com and she can also be contacted on 087 7904895.

COBH HOCKEY CLUB
Div 6 were back to winning ways last Sunday when they had a 2-1 win in a very closely contested game against UCC at home. Both teams fought hard for the lead in the first half and they had some nice moves. Kate Morgan and Chelsea Crone in particular and Sonia Brady did some good work for Cobh and in defence Barbara O'Keeffe and Abbie Mulvihill worked well to keep UCC out. Despite both teams efforts the half ended 0-0.
The second half saw UCC attack more and with about 10 minutes gone a well taken shot from the edge of the circle found the net. Cobh however never gave up and when they were awarded a short corner Caroline Green's pass found Kate Morgan who made no mistake to give her team the equaliser. This seemed to spur Cobh on and constant pressure led to another short corner with about 7 minutes to go and this time Caroline Green hit an unstoppable shot to the net to put Cobh in the lead. UCC to their credit never gave up and the last few mins were tense as they fought for the equaliser but Cobh held on for the 3 points.
This win sees Cobh at the top of Div 6 as are Div 3. Next week sees the two teams in a repeat performance as they meet in the Mardyke in the Div 6 Cup.
