FEARLESS YACHTSMAN HONOURED BY OLD ALMA MATER
Barry Hurley, who competed in the OSTAR Original Single Handed Transatlantic Race received the Past Pupil 2009 Award at the Colaiste Muire Annual Awards Ceremony on Friday last.
Barry was one of 77 award recipients who were honoured by their school for their many achievements in the academic, sporting, drama, music and community fields as well as for their humanitarian and caring approach to life.
Bryan Savage, Chairperson of the Students Council, paid tribute to the parents and teachers for their support to the students, and said “the holistic approach to education in the school was of great value to them.”
Principal, Paula Sweeney said the evening was a celebration of the goodness and talent of the students;“Our school continues to be a happy place where students are nurtured and cherished, the atmosphere is a family one.”
She said a lot of people complain about young people, but she has seen how they share and use their talents throughout community life in Cobh.
In his speech, Barry Hurley spoke about the challenges he faced during the race which goes against all climatic elements, and, where competitors are told “they should be prepared to die like gentlemen!”
He said he decided to undertake this gruelling challenge when a friend told him to “live every day now”. He encouraged the students to have a dream and work to achieve it, and it was clear that he, indeed, lived his dream.
Barry ended by quoting the motto: “Life is not about sitting out the storm, it is about going out and dancing in the rain.”
Barry was accompanied by his parents, John and Pat.
Mayor Paddy Whitty paid tribute to the Presentation Brothers and Mercy Sisters for their work in the field of education throughout Ireland and said the students were “a credit to your teachers and parents. There is a lovely atmosphere here tonight, it is indicative of the atmosphere throughout the year in the school.”, he added. Mary O’Connor

COBH HOCKEY CLUB
Div 4 recorded their first win of the season last weekend with a fine 3-0 win away to Bandon. Cobh had the best of starts when with only about 5 mins gone they scored from a short corner when Fiona O'Regan's shot was deftly deflected into the net by Aoife Hart. Cobh continued to pressurise stringing together some lovely moves and this paid off when Fiona O'Regan made it 2-0 after about 20mins.
Bandon however were very dangerous on the break and on their short corners and Jessica Stack was called upon to make a couple of good saves from corners. The second half saw Cobh really come together and the passing between the midfield and forwards was excellent with one great move between Aoife Richardson, Fiona O'Regan and Grainne Kilcullen saw Grainne blast a beautiful shot to the net to make it 3-0 and the game beyond doubt. Cobh's defence handled everything that Bandon threw at them and the game finished with the full points going to Cobh.

The Club will be holding their Annual Table Quiz in Cobh GAA on Thursday 26th November at 8.30pm Tables will be €20 and as usual there will be food and a raffle, so come along for a great night’s entertainment.

Implementation of the Cobh (Regulation & Control of the Consumption of Intoxicating Substances in Public Place) Bye Laws 2000.
The following is a notice from Garda Inspector, John Deasy:
“The Great Island Business Association is actively encouraging and promoting a good image of Cobh.It is believed that the consumption of intoxicating liquor in public places in Cobh, in contravention of the Cobh Bye Laws, impacts negatively on the good image of Cobh and people’s enjoyment of amenities in Cobh town.An Garda Siochána is committed to enforcing the Bye Laws. We are currently engaged with Cobh Town Council in initiating a “fine on the spot notice” system which will further assist in the implementation of the Bye Laws.
This will allow persons who are found drinking in public places within the functional area of Cobh Town Council, the option of paying a fine to the Council, thereby avoiding a prosecution being initiated in the District Court. It is hoped this system would be an adequate deterrent to those involved in drinking in public places, which can be unsightly and lead to people engaging in anti-social behaviour.
We actively support the Great Island Business Association’s efforts to promote a positive image of Cobh and ask for the support of the community in this matter.”    John Deasy, Inspector.

COBH GEARS UP FOR CHRISTMAS
The Cobh & Harbour Chamber has launched its shop local drive.Although renowned as a heritage town with a wealth of maritime history and activities for all ages, it is the shopping scene which the Cobh and Harbour Chamber is highlighting this Christmas season.
Kathleen Geary, CEO of the Cobh and Harbour Chamber is urging all shoppers to "Shop Local" this Christmas.
"Cobh Retailers have a wide variety of goods on offer to the consumer at competitive rates and many retail outlets are running their own promotions with plenty of prizes for the shopper" she states.
"Everything from handmade pottery to local art, trendy and designer clothing for males and females, vouchers for gourmet meals in local restaurants and plenty of Christmas Fayre for the festive season. With less than six weeks to Christmas there is still time for shoppers to avail of the convenience of the ‘Christmas Clubs’ which operate in many stores where customers can pay for goods on a weekly basis and a deposit secures most items".
There have been a number of new businesses which have opened their doors in Cobh since the beginning of the year who add to the great variety of goods that Cobh has on offer.
Many shops in the town will be opening late over the festive season so come and avail of the one hour free parking or use or free car park and make a day of it by enjoying lunch in one of the excellent eateries in the town.
The Cobh & Harbour Chamber would encourage everyone, not just for the Christmas season but throughout the year, to endeavour to shop local and help to keep local retailers, who employ local people, in business.
