Inishowen Maritime Museum is located in the beautiful village of Greencastle,

Inishowen, Co. Donegal.  Ireland.

On the bank of Lough Foyle the village has long been a traditional fishing port.

Greencastle Village and Pier at night.

As well as being beautiful the village also contains some interesting history.

Its location near the mouth of Lough Foyle made it the ideal place to observe shipping entering and leaving the Lough.

To this end two strongholds were built here, the ancient De Burgh Castle, and a Napoleonic Fort.

The Fort (now a hotel), opposite Martello Tower, and De Burgh Castle.

Castle Inn (also a hotel), De Burgh Castle, and Fort.

Adjacent to the village is the even older community of Shrove.  At the mouth of the Foyle this picturesque area contains ancient worship and burial sites, and is the location of a lighthouse to guide ships as they enter the Foyle.

Inishowen Head Lighthouse, Shrove.

Michael John's Pub and Inishowen Head Lighthouse, Shrove.

The Fort was built with a Martello Tower for defence and observation and had a corresponding tower on the opposite shore of the Lough, Magilligan Point, in

Northern Ireland.

The tower at the Fort is unique in that it is elliptical in shape instead of round.
