50th Anniversary About the school Headfort House Home
The Hall

The ceiling of the Hall is much as Adam had designed it and the fireplace may well also be an Adam design, though it does not match the original drawings. Adam had intended that plasterwork panels with rich characteristic motifs would decorate the walls.

Part of the ceiling in the Front Hall. The corner panels are in the shape of harpsichord lids, richly decorated. The central patera is oval in shape, as you can see, and set in an oval border.

This intent was never carried out. Also strangers to the design are the doors, both in the Hall and elsewhere on the ground floor. These are of panelled mahogany and bear no resemblance to anything extant in the designs. The Hall measures 27' by 30' and faces North. Apart from the ceiling and the fireplace, the room is distinguished by massive double entrance doors and an alcove; formerly there were two alcoves, one of which seemingly housed one of the two organs in the house. One of the alcoves has now been filled in. There are also two dummy doors to preserve the symmetry of the room. As mentioned, the room has currently been refurbished. It has returned to a more traditional colour(pale grey) and all the electrical fittings renewed. the ceiling has been cleaned and the plaster made good. Naturally this is specialised work and costs. However the end result is very pleasing.
