Newsletter October 1997

Welcome back after the summer break to all pupils.

We extend a special cead mile failte to the children in Junior Infants who are joining the "big school" for the first time. We hope they have a most pleasant year.

We also welcome to the school our new secretary who is employed under the Community Employment Scheme. Her name is Brenda Cowlard and in the few short weeks she has been with us, she has made a great impression with teachers, parents and children. We were sorry to lose Attracta Duffy but unfortunately most Fas workers under a certain age receive only a one year contract. - Such are the perils of youth!

Code of Discipline

Our code of discipline is constantly under review. A new updated version will be issued soon and we urge you to study it carefully as the whole document is designed to ensure that children are educated in a safe environment.

Swimming

Swimming classes have recommenced for 5th and 6th class children in Naas swimming pool on Monday afternoon for the next ten weeks.

Gaelic Football

Boys U-11 team and a Girls football team are currently engaged in Cumann na mBunscol leagues. While the results in the Boys games have been disappointing there is no lack of enthusiasm.

The Girls football team are playing very well under coach Mrs McNelis and it really would be something special if they reached the final and got the chance to play in Croke Park.

Coaches employed by the Dublin County Board and Leinster Council recommence coaching in football and hurling in early October.

Football Forecast

Congratulations to the winners of the All Ireland Football Final Forecast. The winners were Teresa Tormey of Forest Hills and Sean Slattery of Clonsilla who received £50 each. The winning lines were sold by Laura Behan and Garry Geoghegan.

The Forecast brought in a staggering £792 which will be used to purchase much needed sports equipment. Well done to all concerned. If only the result of the match was different!

Music

Tin whistle classes are about to get underway for children in 2nd, 3rd and 4th class. Our thanks to Mrs McKeon for her expertise and hard work.

Parent/Teacher Meetings

Parent/Teacher meetings will take place on Thursday and Friday 23rd & 24th October. As heretofore parents will be given an appointed time to meet their child's teacher and we ask you to make every effort to avail of this opportunity to discuss your child's progress with his/her teacher.

Computer Course

A ten week course in computer skills starts on Tuesday 7th October for children from 2nd class to 6th class. The fee involved is a very reasonable £20.

We have a huge amount of programmes on our computers - one of the largest in the Dublin area. This is a wonderful achievement after only one year in operation. Teachers and children are becoming more familiar with the computers but with a very loaded curriculum only a limited amount of time can be given over to computer skills. Therefore it is necessary to organise courses outside normal school time so that children will derive maximum benefit from this great facility.

Wet Mornings

As winter approaches, which brings its fair share of wet mornings, please do not send your child too early to school. On a wet morning no child should arrive any earlier than 9.15am. The school cannot take responsibility for your child before 9.15am. Under no circumstances are children to enter the school without permission from teachers.

Tidy Towns

Congratulations and well done to Rathcoole for securing 1st place as the Tidiest Village in South County Dublin. It was great to see the hard work of the local Tidy Towns Committee rewarded. The area immediately outside the school gates is a credit to them and it is a reminder to us that we can all do something to keep Rathcoole litter free and a place to be proud of.
