On Sunday, 5th July, 1998 the 1798 monument was unveiled next
to the Old Library by the Tánaiste, Mary Harney. The monument
commemorates the participation of the local community in the
1798 Rising.
Fund-raising was
organised by "The Four Districts 1798 Association". The members of the
association were Liam McDermott, Fr.Colm O'Siochrú, Bróna
Uí Loing, Ann Hackett, John Keegan, Martin Hoban, Mary McNally, Jack
Graham, Evelyn Murphy, Anne Keegan, Annie Timmons, Shay Watkins, Maeve Moloney,
Séamus Ó hIcí, Monica Hanlon, Tomás Ó
Séaghdha, Walter Rockett, Paddy Gavin, Proinsias Ó hAilín,
Brenda Mhic Guinnea, Liam Fyans, Liam Roche and Margaret
