Change, Loss and Death
A Programme for Schools

PASTORALCARENEWS.gif (2956 bytes)

This programme for students is now at an advanced stage of preparation. The Lions Club, whom we would like to thank for their support and encouragement, has shown great interest in it. The Transition Year Team under Gerry Jeffers have also been extremely helpful with ideas and suggestions. Because it is planned to publish the material and resources to a very high standard, it will not now be available until the start of the school year next September.

This will be a comprehensive programme for schools dealing with major issues - it will include: rationale, complete class plans, student handout material. It will also contain a range of backup material for the teacher and indications for the ongoing resourcing of staff involved in facilitating the programme. This programme has already been very successfully piloted and will make an invaluable contribution to schools.

It has the vital added advantage of being an Irish resource.

It is my view that change, Loss and Death Education should not merely be confined to individual situations as they unfold. In its fullest sense it must be pro-active and wholistic endeavour. It should ensure that all students have exposure to a comprehensive programme which can facilitate this - the senior cycle is perhaps the most appropriate locus.

A total of 15 interrelated programme themes emerged from the entire research process. Sequenced as follows the themes included:
Change throughout life, past, present and future.
First and earliest memories of personnel loss through death.
