HEAD SHAVE FOR CHARITY
FRIDAY 23 MAY 2003
Unlike Samson, whose strength was in his hair, Castleknock hurlers obviously believe that the skill of the hurl is not dependent on their lovely locks. Several members of Castleknock Hurling Club volunteered to have their heads shaved last Friday night to raise funds for two very worthy charities – Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the Special Olympics 2003 World Games. Over €4000 was raised in sponsorship on a night which was deemed a huge success by all.
The lads were joined by Gardai from Garda HQ who also decided to put their heads on the line for Temple Street and Special Olympics.
Not to be outdone, two brave cailíni, Martha Francis and Emma adopted the ‘Sinead O’Connor’ look in a bid to raise funds for their favourite charities. Between them the two girls raised over €2000.
Organised by Junior Chamber Castleknock, the head shave took place in Myo’s Pub, Castleknock and kept hairdresser Rachel busy for several hours.
In addition to this fund-raising event, an extremely prestigious award was made to an unsuspecting Jim Hynes, former President of Junior Chamber Castleknock. National President, Jeremy Doyle, was in attendance to present Jim with his Senatorship of Junior Chamber International, effectively an honourary life membership in recognition of his ongoing contribution to Junior Chamber projects. Jim then became the next volunteer to have his head shaved in aid of the night’s two charities.
