In the Gospel of John, chapter 21 and from verse 15-17,Jesus 3
times,
asks Peter if he loves him.
And Peter every time, affirms that he indeed loves Jesus.
And 3 times Jesus tells him to take care and feed the sheep and lambs of Jesus'.
Most people seem to think and preach that this was the time that Jesus forgave
and restored Peter back to his apostolic position.
But this can't be and it is not so. For surely Jesus forgives us when we repent
and with contrite heart we ask forgiveness and not when we have
first done or said something nice to God. So Peter was not forgiven after
he affirmed that loved Jesus, but when he shed bitter tears of contrition for
having denied Him, as in Matthew 26:75.
I believe that the reason that Jesus asked Peter- as He asks all of us-
if he/we love Him; is for Jesus not only to remind us but to drive home
the point that the only way to prove our love for him, is, to feed and
care for our brothers/sisters in Christ. To be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave us.
God bless you.
