Below is Richard Edgeworth's Will. Richard was eldest son of Richard Lovell Edgeworth and commonly known as the 'Emigrant'
South Carolina. In the name of God, Amen.
I Richard Edgeworth of Cheraw District, in the State aforesaid, planter, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First, I will that all my just debts be paid and discharged by my Executors hereafter named. Also it is my Will that my wife Elizabeth Edgeworth shall have the use of all my property in North and South Carolina jointly with my son Sneyd Edgeworth and my children that may hereafter be born during her widowhood, but should my said wife marry before my child or children arrive at the age of twenty one years, I, in that case bequeath unto to her, one third part of my personal Estate and one hundred pounds sterling to be paid her two years after marriage in lieu of her dower. I also bequeath unto my son Sneyd Edgeworth my plantation in Anson co., North Carolina containing two hundred acres more or less and known by the name of Ashton together with the remaining part of my personal property in the aforesaid States of North and South Carolina provided I should have no younger child or children, but in case I should have more children, then I give and bequeath the whole of real and the remainder of my personal property in the aforesaid States to be equally divided between them share & share alike to them and their heirs & Assigns forever. I also give and bequeath to my son Lovell Edgeworth, all my property in Europe, both real and personal to him and his heirs and assigns forever. It is my will that my son Lovell shall immediately after my death be given up to my friend John Hardwick and by him conveyed to my father Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Esq. of Edgeworths Town, County of Langford, Ireland for which purpose I bequeath unto said Hardwick, one hundred pounds sterling to be paid out of my property in Europe. And lastly, it is my will and I do hereby nominate and appoint my father Richard Lovell Edgeworth Esq., Capt Claudius Pegues of Marlborough County, John Boone and John Hardwick of Georgetown my executors of this my last Will and Testament, & Trustees for my wife and children--- In witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninty two.
