A no brainer. Mindless entertainment at its best. If ever Mummy 2 comes out, I for one will stay well away. Two hours ago I was leaving the cinema and people were talking about what they're going to do tonight and where were they going, Nothing about the movie they just saw. What's the movie about? A mummy who comes alive and wants to takes over the world after being mummified alive three thousand years ago for committing a heinous crime. And he has a bit of a voracious appetite for devouring humans.
Where do I begin, Animation?, special effects?, well they weren't up to much I can tell you. These days you can tell if the special effects are good or not and in this movie they're not great. There's just something about them, the beetles for example(pesky man eating beetles by the way), they look to me a little surreal. The mummy is okay and the sand effects, but nowadays they have to be spot on, especially after movies the likes of The Matrix and Star Wars. On the other hand the acting was up to scratch it seemed but that was the only thing that held the hold heap together. It would seem that we'll probably see more of both Brendan Fraiser and Rachael Wiez after their performance.
On a different note I think for 18 year olds and up this movie is a bit of a bore. I mean my friend actually dozed off at the start of it. The whole thing is slow to get started(even though there is desert shoot out)and when it does its just mediocre. Its the sort of childish movie that you see little mistakes that would annoy the shit out of you like when Brendan Fraiser is running away from the bad guys at the start one minute you see that they're two meters behind him and when the camera angle changes they are ten meters behind him and it did this a few times. Its a pathetic attempt at suspense. I must say that I get a wee bit pissed off at ideas such as this. Another is how they end the movie. Imagine a bunch of filmmakers and screenwriters sitting around a table drinking coffee after a hard days work. And one says "Hmmm how will we end this movie?" …"Ah", another says…"I know, lets have someone pull a lever and everything collapses and the good guys just make it out and the bad guy dies" . Well that's exactly what happens the bad guy pulls a lever (The lever that happens to be the self-destruct lever). And the place begins to fall apart. Also when the mummy attacks Fraiser, he is flung around the place, fired meters into the air by a single blow and hoped off walls yet he comes out of it all with not even a limp just a smile.(then again that's his role!)
All this said though it would be enjoyable for 10-15 year old I would think especially after A comment I heard on the way in from a ten year old.. "The Mummy is awesome". But damn that little one. It was he who polluted my mind as to the greatness of this film which may have led me to my harsh review, but damn it I thought it was boring. There was no violence and I must admit I like a eyeful of violence now and then for example, Just when something gruesome is going to happen it cuts to something else or you see the expression of some onlookers face as the fatal blow falls. But of course it all comes back to the target audience.
Now on to another matter, Some of you(or even all of you) may note a resemblance to Indiana Jones, well, so did I, It is not just the desert type landscape that makes you feel you're watching an Indy clone, but the main character also - Brendan Fraiser. Someone definitely wanted him to be like good old Indy, With his little dollops of humour thorn in hear and there in the face of danger. He's the closest thing that to Indy, since Indy himself!
This movie would make a good Saturday morning cartoon, that's about it. Otherwise it's a children's movie. Yes they would like it. Childsplay, that's all. Anyone who wants too see a bit of a thriller/horror delightfully mixed with a little humour Indiana Jones Style, then they may be disappointed. It doesn't come close to the Indiana Jones trilogy. It just hovers at the nonabsorbent level of a very average movie.
