Inland Ireland Windsurfing Spots
Inland
- Lurgan
Set on the shores of Lough Neagh, beside Mullin Marine, this is a nice
conserved recreational park devoted to sports, with windsurfing being
included. A beautiful spot with alot of good sailors. Small waves
can be created off the point when the wind is blowing down the lake.
The lake is very long so the fetch can reach a good size.
- Ballyronan
On the NW shore, Sandy beach!, Watersports centre, car
park and windsurfing club, The lough can get exceptionally rough, with
7ft swells, best directions SE to SSW, athough, you can get away with N
to SW if consistant.
- Toome Bridge
At the River Bann, to get to the launch site, you have to
drive across a field, beside the Chapel and housing estate for 2mins,The
lough is relativity shallow and rocks underfoot watch the Skegs, the best
direction is NW-N.
- Cranfield
Near to Randlestown Co. Antrim, Great spot, very desolate,
and exposed, the only directions to sail here are sw to w, the swells
here are massive in gales up to 10ft!!!! (In the Biggest lake in British
Isles), Locals try to discourage sailing there due to several locals
drowning, there are only two problems, a) the shallows are stoney and
drop away very quickly, b)It's a long way to drift is somthing goes
wrong.
- Antrim
Two sites either side of the river, the boat club or the public
carpark, lots of windsurfers, due to distance from Belfast, best
direction SW to NW, the swell can be quite steep.
- Mountshannon
This is situated on a lake of the river Shannon, and has some nice cottages
that are nice for staying in right on the shore of the lake. The sailing
is mainly longboard sailing or short board blasting.
- Shannonside
This is a sailing school that operates on the lake and there are alot of
local windsurfers. The main interest here is the Mistral Olympic One-
design board.
- Dromineer
This site is ideal for beginners and those improving as the beach is in
sheltered waters and out further you can enjoy lake sailing in the vast
lake (many miles long) without being too far from shore. Another
advantage is that the hotel and pubs are within crawling distance from
the waters edge.
