Description

The Great Famine in South-West Donegal 1845-1850 Pat Conaghan 1997 The famine in S.W. Donegal examined from a local point of view.

This book sets down the events that took place in part of Donegal, in a small region far from the centres of power and wealth. The north west may have been remote, but it was not out of reach; it was accessible by sea - the natural highway for the distribution of goods in the 19th century.

Indeed, the port of Killybegs was used as a main depot in the north west of Ireland for supplying the surrounding countryside with Indian meal and other food.

"Many changes have occurred in Killybegs over the past few years. It is these changes that are illustrated in this book. Old and new are shown side by side and, by comparing one with the other, both dramatic and subtle changes are identified. Old houses have been torn down, the shore-line has been transformed."

One could cover pages describing the changes but as "one picture is worth a thousand words" the author lets them speak for themselves.

"I first became interested in local history as I accompanied my father, Charlie Conaghan, on his expeditions around Killybegs, ...... this interest was whetted when I was able to assist him in gathering material for his book, "History and Antiquities of Killybegs." This is not a history of Killybegs. Instead, a small number of well defined subjects has been chosen and each one treated more fully than it might have been in a general history. I invite the reader to flick back through the pages of time in the hope that enjoyment, even enlightenment, will be found."

Description

History and Antiquities of Killybegs Charles Conaghan 1974 A history of Killybegs.

"In the following pages I have endeavoured to set down as clearly and as concisely as I can, the story down the centuries of this my native parish; in so far as I have been able ... to garner that story, from the records and sources most readily available. To say that this is the complete history of Killybegs would be very much of an overstatement, because of the somewhat painful knowledge, that there must be records relating to this port and town, that are entirely beyond my capacity to reach."
