Mother Teresa

In one of the poorest cities in the world - Calcutta, India - a European woman devoted her life to helping the poor and the needy. Mother Teresa, an Albanian nun, led the Missionaries of Charity. In the beginning they had nothing and went around helping as many people as they could. But, today, they receive a lot of donations from around the world.

Mother Teresa was bornin Albania in 1910 and was called Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her father was a businessman and they were quite wealthy. When she was nine her father died and her family were poor. This experience helped her when she went to Calcutta. She took her name from St. Teresa of Avila, patroness of the Missionaries.

In 1948, Mother Teresa came across a half-dead woman lying in front of a Calcutta hospital. She stayed until the woman died. From then on, she worked with the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. She was called the "Saint of the Gutters"

50 years after the founding of her order, the Missionaries of Charity have grown from 12 sisters in India to over 3,000 in 517 missions all over the world.
