Thomas Bernardo
Thomas John Barnardo was born in 1845 in Dublin. A clerk by profession, he ended up studying medicine. After becoming a Christian in 1863, he went preaching in the Dublin slums. While he was still studying medicine he founded the East End Mission for destitute children in the Greater London area.

The reason Bernardo set up the homes was due to one young boy named Jim Jervis. Jim called to Bernardos house one night looking for somewhere to stay. He said he had no parents and no home and that there were lots of children like him in London.Barnardo took him in him and later searched London for other boys like him. He opened his first home in 1870.

The home extended and is still exists in England. The organisation is known as Bernardos and helps families and children who are facing hardship. it has over 300 services in Britain and employs over 5,000 staff.

130 years later, Bernardos is still helping.
