GAELIC CELTIC CULTURE

The ways of the Gaelic Celt are not dead and gone. They still exist as living things in the remote areas of Gaelic lands as well as in the records of those who preserved them for all time in written form. These ancient customs have however become diminished by the “MacDonaldisation” that is ravaging traditional customs and values the world over. We must preserve those legacies of our ancestors. They are the only way back to completeness for us today. For this reason it is imperative that we of Gaelic Celtic descent preserve what is left, and revitalize what is still very much retrievable.

Traditional Crafts Found In Gaelic Celtic Culture

The following is not by any stretch of the imagination a complete list of the skills found amongst our Ancestors. It is however a very good primer covering the skills. The skills were a very important part of the culture of our Ancestors. The skills were a matter of holding knowledge, and knowledge has always been a sacred thing to our People. The Dagda (Doy-da) was considered a “Good God” not because of the benevolence we have come to associate with the term “good” in western
thought. Dagda was/is called the “Good God” because of the Skills he brought to our People. Lugh Lamfadh was given the title Ildanach because He was/is master of all the skills. The skills were and are so very important because they helped to insure the very lives of the people. Mantles and cloaks kept the people warm in the cold months, swords and spear points helped defend against
raids and the physician helped heal of illness however it came about. The skills like most every other aspect of the culture of the Ancestors was governed by the Brehon Laws. The holders of the skills were people of high esteem in the culture. The skills were preserved, passed on, and worked in poetic form. Some skills took as long as 19 years to learn. Whereas the Ruadh had it’s correlation in the Sea, and the Aire in the Land, so did the skilled people have their correlation in the Sky. It
must be remembered that the Cauldron of the culture reflected the cosmos as seen by the People. It is when one starts looking at things in this manner, that it starts to become obvious what the logic of the Ancestors was when they first devised the social structure. As the waters of the Sea is the Spirit/Mind of People (Ruadh) and the World, and as the Land is the Form (Aire), so is the Sky with it’s fiery governor the very Soul (Fili). Now we see why it was the Fili who were charged with creating the laws of the culture. These very laws, mirroring themselves the Order of Nature, brought Order to Chaos, they in a very real way constructed the world of our ancestors.
