Hurling and Camogie page

Under age hurling has been played in Ardrahan for the last century and it is a favorite pastime of nearly every young boy and girl in Ardrahan. There also has been a lot of success in the parish and there has been a lot school success also. In the 1990’s the school has been in no less than five county finals. The club of Ardrahan also has had a lot of success also, and we have won a lot finals down through the years, and we also had a few players playing for the under 14,s of Galway. This year the under 10,s of Ardrahan won the under 10,s blitz, in Ardrahan, and I was apart of that team. And we also won the Brendan Linnane in 1998 aNd for the last few years we had our medals presented by FAMOUS hurlers by the names of Jamsie o Connor [Clare hurler], Michael bond [manager of Offly hurling team] and also Steven Byrne [Offly goalkeeper]. Séanie Macmahon also gave us medals. This is all for now see you later.

Camogie:

Camogie is a game very similar to hurling. The only difference is that only girls can play camogie.

Annually the camogie season starts around April. Labane school haven’t won the championship since 1990.

We start training around February. This year we think that we are in with a chance of winning! Mrs Huges is our trainer.

Also we play for Ardrahan club.

 Camogie A winners 1991

When the winter comes we can’t play because the weather is too wet. We go to school at half nine. At out 11 & 12 break we play camogie.

Camogie is very popular around Ardrahan. Before we start the championship we have to learn some skills. The skills that we learn are dribbling, passing, scoring, saving and lots more skills!

We have a seven-a-side camogie team. At a guess this will be the team for 2000

Camogie in Ardrahan:

Camogie:

The under 10s and upwards get a lot of time to develop their skills. From the ages 10 to 21, they win or lose matches. The training usually starts in March and finishes in late November. Between that time, the camogie championship takes place.

The under 10s train nearly every Saturday in Ardrahan pitch. Their trainers are; Mary Murphy ,and Martin Murphy. This years team had Edel Holland as captain. The players were; Kate O’ Connor, Olga Linnane, Aofie Divney,Treasa Murphy, Emma and Katie Donahue and Rosin Kelly in goals. They got to the final but sadly lost. In the blitz they came second last year. Kate O’ Connor was the captain.

The under 16s are a more mature version of the under 10s. This year they got to the final but lost. A disco was held in the hall for them. Their trainers are; Tresea Murphy and Martin Glynn.

The under 12 camogie team have a lot of sprouting players, who might just grow up to be professional camogie team. The team hadn’t much luck winning matches in the past but we hope they will in the future. Their trainers are Martin Glynn, Treasa Murphy and John Kennedy.
