Ballintubber oust Lahardane to claim first place

Ballintubber’s greater determination saw off a strong Lahardane challenge in a most entertaining under-17 league semi-final at Parke on Sunday.

Although play ebbed to and fro there was a scarcity of scores at both ends, attributed generally to some excellent defending.

Declan Leonard and Stephen Jordan had Lahardane ahead early in the game, but entering the second quarter Ballintubber hit back for a goal by Michael Hoban from close range, connecting onto a fine centre from Padraig Thomas.

The game was held up for a while to attend to an injured player - Joseph Nestor (Ballintubber) - who was subsequently sent to Mayo General Hospital.

When play resumed Kieran Lally and Thomas Jordan exchanged points.

On the resumption Ballintubber took command with points from Kieran Lally, Lynden Reilly and Kieran J.C. Lally before the 40th minute to open up a 1-4 to 0-3 gap.

Lahardane missed a gift-wrapped opportunity to score a goal when Declan Leonard blazed wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.

Vinnie Cawley and Shane Blake did reduce the leeway but Ballintubber held out in the end.
