North Mayo Junior ‘B’ Final (Sunday 25-Aug-96) Final win for battling Moygownagh Moygownagh.........................1-11 Moygownagh booked themselves a place in the semi-finals of the North Mayo junior ‘A’ football championship, following their two points victory over Lahardane in the ‘B’ decider at Killala on Sunday. The Nephinsiders, who have not recorded a win over Moygownagh in recent times, raced into an early lead and it took the winners some time to get to terms with Lahardane’s county minors Declan Leonard and Vinnie Cawley. Inspired by some great work in defence by Brendan Regan and Eugene Holmes, Moygownagh began to eat away into Lahardane’s advantage with some fine scores, but it was an error by Lahardane’s goalkeeper that allowed Moygownagh in for a goal to put them three points clear at the interval. Moygownagh, playing into the wind, looked in trouble when Rowland cut the leeway back to two points shortly after the restart, but it was only in the dying seconds they managed to land the leveling scores to force extra time. Moygownagh, playing into the wind in added time, were on level terms at the change of ends, and the turning point came in the final period when Brendan Regan blocked down a Vinnie Cawley attempt at landing a point. From the breakaway, Derek Carolan put Moygownagh in front and the same player later extended the advantage to two points. In the closing minutes Moygownagh were forced to make a goal line save by Anthony Gallagher. Following the game the cup was presented to Moygownagh team captain Enda Holmes. <<Back |
