D'Arcy's men were worthy champions

1993 Wexford Senior Football Final

Kilanerin 1-05 (08) Sarsfields 1-03 (06)

1993 will go down in the record books as the year when Duffry Rovers' seven-year stranglehold on the Senior football championship was ended.

And fittingly their conquerors, Kilanerin, went on to capture their second title with a replay victory against Sarsfields.

Nicky D'Arcy and his merry men had won five games on the trot in their first year in Senior ranks after capturing the Intermediate title, setting them up for an interesting quarter-final meeting with the Duffry.

In the end it took two memorable goals and a fantastic last minute save by Barry Hughes to deny Seamus Fitzhenry a certain goal, and pave the way for a super-fit Kilanerin team to qualify for the semi-finals on a 2-5 to 0-10 scoreline. Both majors were scored at the Clonard end of Wexford Park, with John Hegarty outsprinting four chasing Duffry defenders in a dash from midfield to score the goal of the season, and Pat Forde showing admirable calm to slot the ball soccer style under Paul Coleman.

In the semi-final, Kilanerin proved too good for a poor Clongeen side to win by 2-6 to 1-5. Their expected opposition and favourites for the championship St. Anne's came unstuck against an all-out effort from Wexford Town's Sarsfields who won by 2 points (3-6 to 0-13).

The novel decider took place in Wexford Park on a wet and windy September 12th - ayouthful Kilanerin side with high hopes against the more experienced Sarsfields men.

Despite the adverse conditions it was a very enjoyable game, with veteran Tony 'Sack' Walsh bringing Sarsfields back from the brink of defeat to force a draw (1-7 to 2-4).

Kilanerin seemed to be heading for glory when Kevin Hempenstall blasted home their second goal to put them ahead by 2-4 to 0-5. At this stage 'Sack' took a major hand in proceedings, and a beautifully-taken Franny Byrne goal with five minutes left was sandwiched in between pointed frees form Walsh and Dodd.

The North County team were renowned for never giving up, and they showed that persistence pays off in the replay on October 3rd. Conditions were atrocious once again, but the roles were reversed on this occasion - this time it was the town team who dominated the game, but Kilanerin came from behind to snatch a dramatic 1-5 to 1-3 win as their opponents failed miserably to convert superiority into scores.

The decisive score arrived eight minutes from the end when wily veteran Eddie O'Sullivan unleashed a terrific shot to the roof of the net after good work in the build-up by captain Nicky D'Arcy and Pat Forde.

The celebrations on the Wicklow border lasted throughout the week, but Kilanerin were brought firmly back down to earth when a classy Baltinglass side beat them 0-15 to 0-3 in the Leinster Club Championship.

Still, it was all part of a learning process for a young team which was to go on to dominate Wexford Club football.
