It was the summer of 1922, when Sergeant Mulligan and five others came as Garda Síochana to occupy Kilmore Barracks. Before then, it had been an R.I.C.barracks and had escaped being burned like so many others. It was a fine two storey building adjoining Ruddy's Pub on one gable. The best-kept secret was a removable stone between the pub and the barracks. Usually a press concealed the stone, but Sergeant Mulligan finally discovered it, when he returned earlier than expected to see a party in full swing. He could see through the wall right in to the Ruddy's pub. As Des Smith wrote an article once about the barracks, he said indeed it could be called a 'whale of a station'. Today the Carroll family occupy this building.Ruddy's pub is now as 'Little Marys'.
