Costello Memorial Chapel

Mr Edward Costello was a merchant. He worked in his shop and he was a kind, charitable man. On October 6th 1877, his wife died at the age of 46. Edward was distraught and he decided to build a memorial church for her. While he was building it, his wife was embalmed and her body was kept by the nuns in the convent on Main Street. In 1879, the church was finished and it had a sunken space designed to hold her coffin. There was a glass window at the back of the church where the light shone through. There also was a garden of flowers and shrubs. Unfortunately, a building was put in this space and the garden no longer exists. The whole church is made of stone. When Mr. Costello was building the church, he had 'Seek not thyself outside thyself' engraved on the stone on the gate .The chapel is six feet long, twelve feet wide and 30ft high. Mr. Costello used the same stone as was used in St. Mary's church to build the chapel. The entrance to the chapel is a beautiful door of wrought galvanised iron. This church is the smallest church in the world.

A fifth class child's imprerssion of of the life of Edward Costello

My name is Edward Costello and I am a merchant. I own the premises which is now known as Flynns. I am a happy man and I love talking to the people of Carrick. I love my wife very much. One night she died. I was very, very sad. At this time, St. Mary's church was being built. I asked the builder for some bricks and built a small church in memory of her. There was a sunken space which was ideal for a coffin. She was buried in the church. A few years later, I died and I was buried beside my wife.
