Drumhierney wood is situated beside Leitrim Village. It is one of the most
productive woodlands in Ireland and is visited by foresters from all over the
world.
The main species planted in Drumhierney include Sitka and Norway spruce with
some oak, also some Poplars and Conifers. Most of the Conifers were planted
between1950 and 1962 and are now nature. Norway spruce was planted for sale
as Christmas Trees, and in one year 80,000 Christmas Trees were exported to
England and America.
Western Red Cedars are also planted in Drumhierney. The timber is of high quality
and in great demand and this species is suitable for wet sites as it is very
stable. Lawson Cypres, which produces very good timber, and Leyland Cypres,
which grow rapidly, are also planted in Druhierney.
