GRANUAILE

The castle's roof was made of lead and on her orders it was stripped and melted down. The following bombardment drove the English back to the mainland to carry out the siege from there. After dark she sent someone through a secret passage to the mainland and lit a series of beacons she had set up. Her fleet put to sea, overcame the English and lifted the siege.

The Gráinne Mhaol Project

In December we made the decision to create an ambitious production that would combine the community involvement of our parade work with the dramatic impact of our indoor productions to create a new and exciting form of storytelling. For the first time the wide breath of the company’s skills would be brought together in one production in what is undoubtedly our most ambitious project to date.

Press Reviews

"The central sea battle scene was imaginatively set but the action here could have hit higher levels dramatically and technically. In fact, there was more focus on Grainne as the emotionally driven rebel than on her legendary, belligerent, passion and sea-raiding exploits."

"There was a generous use of Gaelic in a show that opted for words when spectacle might be more germane to this genre of theatre. "

" The vast setting militated against easy delivery and audibility though Patricia Ford's script was very effective in the short, sharp and stylized dialogues "

" Macnas regular Midie Corcoran , Marie Greaney, Gavin Morgan and Garret Philips displayed commendable arena performance skills and, indeed, there was a tangible sense of purpose and conviction in the face of every performer. No small achievment for this production team. "

" The big community moments were intensely performed, the action, when scaled down tended to be dwarfed by the space and lighting. But those quibbles aside this was immensely inventive and entertaining Theatre"

" The music was designed as an essential power in the drama. the well chosen pieces captured the changing moods superbly though the volume unnecessarily overpowered the action occasionally."
