We see the tree where Joseph and Mary offered a dove. Now water pours
from its branches. John the Baptist in the waterfall, baptising Jesus
with water.
John asks: “Are you the one who is to come?” John says that
he has baptised with water but Jesus will baptise with fire. The dove
reappears above Jesus accompanied by a flame.
Jonah Storm
A sense of hell returns. Jonah (played by Joseph) enters shouting: ‘get
me on the next boat out of here’. A boat appears, with many sailors.
There’s a big tempest, thunder and lightning. Everyone turns against
Jonah.
He admits it’s his fault and asks to be thrown overboard. The storm
subsides, the rain stops. The temple pillars are rearranged to form the
whale’s belly. Jonah is inside the whale. He reconsiders what God
has asked him to do.
Temptation in the Desert
The whale-bones transpose as if they’re lying in the scorched
desert. Jesus is on the rocks. Jonah tells Jesus that if he is the messiah,
people will expect him to act like one. He will have to ‘turn stone
into bread’. Jonah questions Jesus’ ability to fulfil this
task. Jesus says he has to be like Noah and accept God’s will. Jonah
laughs. Jesus walks away from Jonah.
Marriage Feast
At a Marriage Feast at Cana there is great fun and rejoicing. Jesus
is out of place. At Mary’s request, he turns water into wine in
front of our eyes – an image of blood. Mary recognises this. Jesus
realises that there is no way back and he rejects Mary to begin his final
journey towards his fate.
