General Arithmetic Paper.1. Question 1 for Year 1997.
Q.1. (a) A machine broke down at 0935 hours. It was repaired at 1210 hours.
For how many hours and minutes was the machine out of order.
Ans :
                
From 0935 until 1210 = 2 hrs 35 mins.
(b)
IR£2500 was invested for three years at Compound interest.
The rate of interest was 4% per annum for the 1st year
and 3% for the 2nd year.
(i)
Calculate the amount of the investment after two years.
Ans :
Interest at end of year 1
= £2500 * 4/100 = £100
Amount at beginning of year 2 = £2600
Interest at end of year 2
= £2600 * 3/100 = £78
Amount at end of year 2 = £2678
           (ii)
If the investment amounted to IR£2744.95 after 3 years,
calculate the rate of interest for the third year.
  
Ans :
Interest for 3rd year = £2744.95 - £2678 = £66.95
Interest Rate
= ( 66.95 / 2678 ) * 100 = 2.5%
(c)
(i) The length and breadth of a rectangle are in the ratio 9:5.
The length is 22.5cm, find the breadth.
Ans :
1 part = 22.5 / 9 = 2.5
=> 5 parts = 2.5 * 5 = 12.5
=> Breadth = 12.5
(ii) Tea served in a canteen is made from a mixture of
two different types of tea, types A and B.
Type A costs £4.05 per kg. Type B costs £4.30 per kg.
The mixture costs £4.20 per kg.
If the mixture contains 7kg of type A,
how many kgs of type B does it contain?
