About Our Project

In 2002/2003 we are sad to say goodbye to our old partners Ballysally but excited about working with a new school.  Third class will be working with P5 in Mossley Primary School, Newtownabbey.

The Dissolving Boundaries Project began for us in March 2000, at University College Maynooth, when Heather Gilmore, Lynne Anderson and Glynis Blakely from Ballysally Primary School in Coleraine met Muiréad Gaffney and  Kay McCarthy from Mother of Divine Grace Primary School.

Our Aims

We discussed the project and decided on the following aims:

  • Get to know one another
  • Build relationships between our schools/cultures
  • Learn about our localities
  • Familiarise all involved with the technology and
  • Integrate technology into our curricular and project work.

Our Project

Phase 1

4th Class and P7      Your Place, My Place

The classes were divided into five groups.  They exchanged personal profiles by post.

They made a video of their school which included: the members of each group introducing themselves, a tour of the school and interviews of people who help us.

They exchanged group e-mails and spoke group to group at an introductory videoconference.

They did a project on their city/town.  MDG bound their project about Dublin into a book which was posted to Ballysally and Ballysally shared their work with us at a VC.

We all learned Molly Malone and sang it together at a final VC accompanied by 2nd class on tin whistle and Mr. Hasson on bodhrán.  We had planned to learn Kitty of Coleraine as well but ran out of time.

Phase 2

5th Class and P6  The Olympic Games

The classes were divided into groups of four.  Personal profiles were exchanged by post.

Group e-mails were exchanged and group VC's were held to allow the children get to know one another.

The main project was The Olympics.  Ballysally wrote about the Ancient Olympics to tie in with their Ancient Greeks unit and MDG wrote about the Modern Olympics and Sydney 2000.  E-mails and VC's discussed the project.

We had a joint carol service at Christmas.  We prepared Bible readings and prayers for peace. We sang verses of Away in a Manger in unison between each prayer and reading, accompanied by our principal Sr. Marie and Mrs. Heather Gilmore.  We each prepared a Christmas song to perform for the other class.

We were both studying the EU in the New Year so we had a quiz to test our knowledge.

In early March we had group VC's to discuss our favourite books and authors.  We held up our drawings to show the other children.

In May we will  have a general knowledge quiz.

Phase 3

First Class and P3

First class and P3 have begun to communicate.  They had a VC first during which first class sang a song and P3 said a poem.  They followed this up with e-mails and Easter cards.  The children are now writing personal profiles to exchange by post.

Phase 4

Fourth Class, Room 5 and P5

It is now 2001/2002 school year and we are delighted to continue our link with Ballysally.

Phase 5

Third Class and P5

The two classes are really enjoying getting to know one another and are looking forward to lots of fun on collaborative project work.
