Beech

A beech tree can grow to a height of thirty metres. Because the beech tree has a dense foliage, very little will grow beneath them. Beech trees produce nuts in autumn. Beech can be used to form a thick hedge. It has to be pruned regularly. Beech nuts are used as food for pigs, and oil from these nuts were used to make butter. Furniture and wooden flooring are made from beech nowadays.

Ash

The ash tree is quick growing and will grow in most places. It is late coming to leaf. The root system covers a large area. In summer, bunches of fruit keys hang from twigs. These trees scatter in autumn to form new trees. The ash was often grown at holy wells. Hurleys are made from ash. Ash is also used as firewood for the handles of tools, for oars and for billiard cues.
