Estimation of Dissolved Solids in Water

Apparatus

Beaker
Filtered Water

Method

Weigh a clean dry beaker.

Add 100 cm3 of the filtered water from the previous experiment and then evaporate it to dryness.

Place the beaker in an oven at 105 0 C for half an hour or so.

The dissolved solids will remain in the beaker, the water will evaporate away.

Allow the beaker to cool and then reweigh.

Calculate the mass of solid material:

- In the sample
- Per litre of the water sample.

Result

Total dissolved solids = 182 mg/L
