Ciaran McDonagh - Fr Murphy Athletic Club - First
Irish Athlete to jump over 8M.
At the BLE National Championships held in Santry Stadium,
Ciaran achieved a remarkable honour to be the first Irish man to jump over
8.00m. Ciarans series of jumps included a championship best performance
of 7.75m. He went over the 8.00m mark twice in the long jump
only to have both jumps negated by winds over the legal 2.0m/second
limit.
Records and honours are no stranger to Ciaran as he broke
his own national Irish record in the Long Jump by jumping 7.88m in Riga
on 11 July. The aim of this remarkable young man is to represent
his country by achieving the qualifying standard for the world championships
in Seville August 1999 and the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
UPDATE: 27 August 1999
CIARAN McDONAGH jumped into athletics history at the
Olympic Stadium in Seville when he became the first Irishman to jump 8.00
metres and in the process qualifying for tomorrows final.
On his first attempt he achieved a mark of 7.91m to take
the lead in his group. There was better to come with an 8.00m
jump on his second attempt.
Only six of the 42 starters made the 8.00m mark and now
has firmly secured a place in tomorrows final.
