SLATE

These are Chinese and European slate.  They are very hard-wearing tiles suitable for pubs, restaurants, hotels, shops, conservatories, kitchens and patios.

  • Oriental Autumn (Chinese multi-coloured). It comes in 30 x 30 and 60 x 40 sizes, it's colouring is of autumn rusts on a grey background.
  • Rustic Rosa.  It comes in 30 x 30 size, it's colouring is of burgundy/rust hues on a mushroom background.
  • Charcoal.  It comes in 30 x 30 size, it’s colouring is charcoal/basalt grey/black, sometimes with gold/rusts through it.
  • Black Flagstone.  It comes in 60 x 40, it is very black with a fan patterned surface.
  • No two tiles look the same.  Some are bevelled, some are chipped and some have chisel markings on the surface.  The tiles should be sorted out before laying, putting the roughest ones to the skirting edge of the room and the best ones in the centre.  Use a thick bed adhesive, minimum 10 mm and tap the tiles into it so that the unevenness is tapped into the adhesive and the surface level is flat.  Use a grout space of 10 mm.  Sandstone grout looks best.  Any lipping should be levelled off with a cold chisel so that people don't trip up.  Full laying instructions can be faxed through to you.
