Designed by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG this weapon entered service in 1938.The split trail and rear trunnions allowed high elevation and the recoil system was of the 'variable' type-automatically shortening the recoil as the elevation increased.Lightweight disc wheels with solid rubber tyres were usually fitted though wood-spoked wheels were to be seen on some examples and(to save weight) no shield was used. The gun had a perforated muzzle brake and the breech-ring was unusually massive since it incorporated a joint that allowed the ring to be separated from the gun barrel for transport.A spring balancing-press was fitted to the carriage to counter the muzzle preponderance owing to the rear trunnions.
The whole equipment could be broken down into eight loads.Although a sound design the Geb G 36 suffered from lack of stability at low angles of elevation , the price of lightness in any gun.At high elevation angles the recoil force was directed down but at low angles the force was more rearwaed developing a turning moment about the trail spade that tended to lift the wheels from the ground. In spite of this defect the Geb G 36 appears to have been well-liked by its users and it remained in service throughout the war.
