Specification |
The first Soviet tracked carriage to mount a 152 mm (6 in) gun-howitzer was the SU-152 dating from mid-1943.Based on a KV-1 chassis its arrived just in time to take part in the battle of Kursk and proved itself able to engage all German armour. Its massive 43.5 kg (95.92 lb) projectile could destroy the heaviest German tanks. When the KV-1 production line closed it was decided to fit a similar weapon on the IS series chassis. This became the ISU-152 and was every bit as successful as the earlier model. Two types of gun were employed : the 152 mm (6 in) gun-howitzer and the 122 mm (4.18 in) gun as used on the IS-2 tank carried the same gun only a few ISU-122s were built but they served well until the end of the war. ISU-152s took part in the Battle for Berlin. With no secondary armament other then an 12.7 mm (0.50 in) machine gun over a roof hatch they had to rely on infantry support.Their powerful armament enabled the ISU-152s to destroy German strong points holding up the Russian advance.Olny 20 rounds could be carried inside so more were stowed on the rear decking , as were extra fuel tanks to increase the operational range. The ISU-152 remained in production after the war ended and was developed (post war) into the ISU-130 with a 130 mm (5.12 in) gun. |
