Whereas the StugIII was intended to be an infantry support vehicle the Jagdpanzer IV was a tank destroyer. It was a 1943 development consisting of a modified Panzer IV chassis provided with a very thick armored superstructure with well sloped plates for added protection and mounting a limited traverse 7.5 cm(2.96 in)gun in the front plate.Production of this initial model lasted throughout most of 1944.It proved to be a formidable combat vehicle but the 7.5 cm L/70 which provided better armour penetration. The extra weight of the longer gun made the chassis nose heavy which wore out the rubber-tyred front road wheels rapidly and they had to be replaced by all-steel wheels. The result was known as the Panzer IV/70(V).Yet another Jagdpanzer appeared when the Jagdpanzer IV superstructure and armament was placed directly onto virtually unmodified Panzer IV chassis on production lines-those could be identified by their increased height and were known as Panzer IV/70(A).Those and the Panzer IV/70s,remained in production until the war was in its last stages over 1,000 were manufactured.
All three of the main Jagdpanzer IV models were issued to the Panzer formations to replace other tank types in short supply. The Jagdpanzer IV was less demanding in production facilities and was quicker to manufacture then a tank with a turret.Despite their considerable firepower however, they were handicapped by the limited traverse of their gun.
