The name Mobelwagen(Furniture Van)was the name given by its crews to a special purpose tank:a Panzer IV chassis converted for the air defence role. The odd name was applied due to the slab-sided appearance of the vehicle when on the move the slabs being created by the four upward-folding sides which opened horizontally to form a combat platform.Once opened up the main gun could be seen to be an anti-aircraft weapon with a full 360-degree traverse.Armed with a 37 mm(i.46 in)automatic anti-aircraft gun the Mobelwagen was developed to counter growing Allied air supremacy then very apparent on all fronts - 240 Mobelwagens were produced between March 1944 and March 1945.The Mobelwagen was only one air defence tank based on the Panzer IV chassis. There was also the Wirbelwind(Whirlwind)with 4 20 mm(0.79 in)cannon in an open turret and a similar arrangement used for a 37 mm gun on the Ostwind(East Wind). The eventual replacement foe all those was supposed to be the Kugelbliitz(Ball Lightning)with two 30 mm(1.18 in)cannon in an advanced armored turret but it was developed too late in the war to be produced. This array of self-propelled anti-aircraft guns proved to be of limited efficiency in the field. They had no centralized fire control equipment a key element in dealing with low flying enemy aircraft.
