Specification |
The Red Army was always a proponent of the heavy tank and by 1930 even had a project for a 100 ton tank. That came to naught , but a less ambitious design appeared in the form of the T-32.Influenced by the British Vickers Independent (a commercial design the details of which the Soviets took considerable pains to acquire) , the T-32 was only an interim model for the full production version , the T-35 heavy tank. Besides the main turret which housed a short 76.2 mm howitzer there were two 37 mm (1.46 in) gun turrets and two machine gun turrets and there was another machine gun position in the front hull. The crew was no less then 11 men!The first T-35 was ready in July 1932 and was first displayed at the annual May Day parade in 1933.Its massive dimensions and impressive-looking armament caused an international stir. What was not so apparent was that the great length of the hull made it very difficult to steer and its armour was thin. The guns could only be fired accurately if the tank was stationary. To add to this the T-35 was lumbering beast accross country and had only a limited operational range. Production was very slow.Olny about 60 T-35s were ever made. These were stationed near Moscow and continued to feature in military parades under the baleful eye of stalin.A handful took part in the campaign against Finland and the rest were lost in 1941 , several captured intact , but out of fuel. |
