The T-60 Light Tank was created by removing the amphibious equipment from the T-40.As it was not intended to float the front hull and turret armour was increased to a maximum of 20 mm (0.79 in).It was armed with a 20 mm cannon with a coaxial 7.62 mm (0.30 in) machine gun.The offset turret was a new type copied from a Swedish design
The T-60 retained the same layout as the T-40 and also used as many automobile components as possible. It was a serviceable little tank issued to Red Army reconnaissance units and deployed on all fronts often operating in deep snow when no other vehicles could travel.Well over 6,000 T-60s were produced including the T-60A which had increased armour and to speed production solid steel wheels in place of the former spoked components. The T-60 was still considered to be too lightly armored and the 20 mm cannon armament inadequate.A replacement the T-70 was introduced from 1942 but many T-60 soldiered on.They were highly reliable even in the grim conditions prevailing on the Russian front
Some were modified to carry Katyuscha rocket launcher rails others became anti-tank gun tractors the gun crew travelled on top of the hull hanging on as well as they could. The German Army also employed captured Russian T-60s as artillery tractors towing both field guns and anti-tank weapons.Others served as supply carriers usually with their turrets removed.
