The massive Tiger dwarfed all previous German tanks.Designed as a heavy assault tank capable of breaking through enemy defences, the project started as early as 1937.After a succession of test rigs, the first recognizable Tiger emerged in early 1942.Its tracks were so wide that a special narrow track was provided for rail transport, prior to which the outer of the overlapping road wheels also had to be removed. The turret mounted an 8.8 cm (3.47 in) gun 56 calibres long while the frontal armour was 100 mm (3.94 in)tick. The crew was 5,commander,gunner,loader,driver and a radio operator who doubled as the gunner for the machine gun in the front hull;another machine gun was mounted coaxially with the main gun.Tigers first rumbled into action around Leningrad in August 1942.Soon after, more appeared in Tunisia.Thereafter, they fought on all fronts until the end of the war,a few defending the center of Berlin in April 1945.1,354 were manufactured until as late as August 1944.
In action they soon proved to be slow lumbering beasts with a prodigious thirst for fuel, but their heavy armour and powerful gun made them dangerous opponents indeed, especially for Allied tank crew fighting in much less well protected medium tanks like the M4 Sherman. However while their frontal armour was very difficult to penetrate they could be destroyed if hit in the rear.Command variants of the Tiger were produced and a few were converted into improvised recovery vehicles.
