Freedom of the City Scroll
Above: written on vellum, raised gilding (with 23 ¼ carat gold leaf) with gesso. Gaelic text in half-uncial hand (Japanese sumi ink), decorative capitals based on letters from Lindisfarne Gospels. Coloured text and city shield in gouache. Custom-made casket in Irish bog oak, lined in red silk. Above: the scroll, tied with its red ribbon lacings, is housed in the custom made bog oak casket (with removable lid). The peat staining gives the bog oak its customary jet black appearance. The casket was made by master crafstman Brian Murray, Loughrea, Co. Galway. Above: another full-length view of scroll. It was laced at foot-end with red silk, and then rolled, tied with silk ties, and encased in casket. Measured 73 cm x 37 cm. Above: detail of top portion of scroll (gilding work and heraldry). |
