Calligraphy uncial hand

Uncial hand rough work

Uncial hand rough work, 1997—again, an attempt to get “back to basics” with some uncials practice. This is often referred to as Celtic calligraphy, and is similar to the writing in the Book of Kells. There are many other Celtic style samples on this area of the  website

Here we have brown gouache lettering, on cartridge paper, with felt-tip pens used to colour in spaces between letters and counters. Text is an Irish toast, and roughly translates to:

Health and (long) life to you,
The woman of your choice to you,
    Land without rent,
    And death in Ireland!
