It is often that a joke is not a joke unless told in a certain
way. The lack of inflection in written text initially hindered
the telling of jokes via email, until a system of emotion-icons,
or emoticons, was developed. From the basic smiley face, :->,
to the more complex formal face, :-)}<////>, there are now
plenty of ways of showing that something is either serious or
meant to be taken with a grain of salt. I have listed a few of
the emoticons that I have come across. Please email me at francis_odonovan@bigfoot.com
if you have any personal favourites you wish me to list.
