GOLEEN
With the sale of Scullys house/shop, Harrington's shop and former post-office and the field
behind the village for the first time, since its foundation in the nineteenth century, Goleen is
going to be developed. This is the opportunity to avoid the problems that have been
created in other similar villages.
Goleen is the retail, business and social centre for the community and for the large
influx of summer visitors. Before any further development is allowed the infrastructure
should be assessed, planned and improved. Foresight and imagination will prevent the
village from being swamped with unco-ordinated development
1. Retail and office area
Any development on the main street should include:
Retail Outlets
a. To give variety and keep spending local
b. To encourage visitors to stop and spend in the village
c. To offer services to the community
Business Premises
a. Serviced offices
b. Office rentals
Car parking.
a. Any development on the main street should provide for car parking - underground car
parking in any development would be the most efficient and land economic.
b. This would avoid the traffic difficulties of Schull and would be cheaper to provide than
a by pass.
WATER and SEWAGE
A full study of the water and sewage requirements for the whole area from Lowertown
west should be commissioned so that the needs for the future can be delivered most
efficiently.
Following the report of the study, a partnership with private enterprise and the County
Council for the immediate development of sufficient services should be considered.
2. WATER
The present Goleen water scheme is not suitable to connect with any more houses. There
are houses and farms on either end of the water scheme which cannot get water now,
especially in the summer.
The introduction of more houses, especially holiday houses, requires too much water for
the scheme, especially as people from cities use water without realising there is a problem.
Solution:
Increase the size of the reservoir. The capacity can be increased substantially by
building up one section of the side of the reservoir.
Increase the size of the bore of the pipe from the waterworks to the village.
Bore a well or series of wells to cater for the new development. The effect of
this on the water table for the whole area will have to be surveyed.
3.SEWAGE
The stream running from Knocknamadree and the tidal harbour are natural
amenities of the area which have to be protected from pollution.
The present system of putting the sewage through a septic tank with the effluent
going into the sea at the mouth of the harbour will not be suitable for more
users.
Any bio system that is suggested for a single housing scheme will alter the
ecosystem of the stream. An integrated sewage treatment plant is needed for
the whole village which has the capacity for future developments.
Goleen Village
Public toilets. The Telecottage is the obvious site for this amenity.
Enterprise Centre for the area. This could be located in St. Patrick’s. Mr. Ken
James has suggested that he would like the community to acquire the property.
The IDA and the County Council could be approached to purchase the house
and land jointly.
Public housing is beneficial to the area as it is occupied by full time residents
who use the schools, shops and facilities.
The land behind the old forge up Church Road has been purchased by the
County Council. They should also consider purchasing the land behind the
village towards the river for the development of public housing and a recreation
area and the land opposite Tommy Hodnett’s house.
Recreation areas to include children's play area and a walk from the village
round the harbour & along by the river.
Pavements - to link all housing safely with the centre
ESB - underground in whole village This can be part of the village renewal
scheme entry.
