School Cottage Contact: INT + 353 28 37296 email: cod@iol.ie
School Cottage is a traditional Irish stone cottage that has been completely renovated to a
very high standard. It is situated 4 miles west of Schull, in easy reach of many of West
Cork's famous attractions. Set in a pretty garden on a quiet country road, the cottage
offers extremely comfortable accommodation in the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful
Irish countryside, and at the same time being minutes away from the seaside village of Schull.
Nearby are many bars, restaurants of international renown, beaches, and leisure activities.
School cottage lies amidst the gently rolling fields to the west of Schull. It is set in a
garden bordered with mature trees and a stream on the western boundary, with views across
the surrounding fields towards Dunmanus Bay, the hills of the Beara peninsula, to Mount
Gabriel, and towards the Mizen Head. School Cottage was in the past the home of the local
schoolmaster, and the old school building (now our studio) lies next door. There is a large
area in front of the old school building offering ample parking. The cottage will accommodate
up to six, and the sleeping arrangements are flexible.
The kitchen/dining room is fully equipped with a Siemens eye level grill, oven, gas hob,
microwave oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and purified drinking water tap. There is a generous
amount of high quality cooking equipment, and a large dinner service. The living room
has an open fire, comfortable seating, TV with RTE 1&2 plus Multichannel (providing 5 UK
broadcast channels plus Sky 1 and Discovery). A video recorder, CD and tape player and
radio (UK Radio 4 on long wave) is included. A glazed door leads into a pleasant garden
room with western views across the fields to distant mountains.
The large master bedroom has double French windows opening onto a paved terrace. It is
equipped with a 6ft double bed that can be converted into two singles. Ample wardrobe and
drawer space is provided. The en-suite bathroom has a full size bath, a separate walk in
shower, washbasin, wc and heated towel rail.
Next to the back door is a utility room that contains a freezer, a Siemens washing machine,
tumble dryer, sink unit and wc. There is also a steam iron and ironing board.
Upstairs the accommodation consists of two small double bedrooms each with its own washbasin.
(One has a 5ft double bed, the other two bunks). These two rooms share a bathroom that has
a full size bath, shower, hand basin, wc, and heated towel rail.
The cottage offers a very pleasant home-from-home atmosphere; a high standard of décor has
been applied throughout, with good quality carpets, restful colours, pictures, and a selection of
books and videotapes for your enjoyment. It is dry and warm throughout the year. Comfort and safety have been a priority in the restoration of this cottage, and all wiring and plumbing is new and certified. It is centrally heated throughout. We prefer our guests not to smoke inside the cottage.
There are plenty of things to do. Try golf, sea, lake and river fishing, sailing, scuba
diving, walking, bird watching, bicycle hire, tennis, pony trekking, and visiting the
numerous historical and archaeological sites. The wide sandy beach at Barley Cove is
20 minutes away, but many beautiful sandy and pebble beaches can be discovered within a
few minutes drive. There are excellent restaurants within a short distance of the cottage,
and innumerable bars offering traditional Irish craic. The shops in Schull provide truly
cosmopolitan goods as well as first class local produce. Included in the weekly rental
price are electricity, heating oil and gas. We provide quality bedlinen, towels and
bathrobes (though we would ask our guests to bring their own beach towels). A payphone
is provided. For those who would like an open fire we can arrange for turf, coal, and
logs to be provided at cost. We supply a starter pack of basic kitchen supplies ready
for your arrival, and will try to accommodate any reasonable request.
