St.Joseph's, Bantry

In 1982 Bantry Community Industries was formed to help train special needs people for work, involve them in social activity and generally help them to integrate into the local community Then in 1988, a purpose built workshop was opened entitled St.Joseph's, by which name the organisation became locally [but incorrectly] known.

CoAction is a word that the organisation hope to clearly define and make their own. They see it as "people acting, working and making things happen together, involving and empowering people with learning disabilities and their families."The word CoAction will become synonymous with the services they provide in West Cork.

Table Tennis has been played at the centre for some time on one table. This year 1999 Owen Kelly of the WCTTA has started coaching on Monday afternoons and the centre recently purchased a second, new table. About 8 players take part in the coaching and have recently started using a training robot. It is hoped that a number of players will play in a main stream assimilation event in 2000.
