November
The Cork Senior league got under way in early November with ten teams competing in two divisions.
In Round one there were victories for UCC B over Beech Hill B and Beech Hill A over Ballincollig with some very close games in a 6-4 scoreline. In round two there were victories for Thurles over Beech Hill B, UCC B over West Cork B, UCC A over West Cork A, and Harlequins over Ballincollig on another 6-4 scoreline with many games here going to five sets and fiercely contested.
With the first two matches played UCC top both Divisions 1 and 2 of the League. At this stage it is difficult to predict the winners in either section. In Division 1 UCC A have made a great start, with their team including Paul Twomey, Gary Noonan, Linda O'Sullivan and Linda Mountjoy, Joanne Donovan, Scott & Mike McGowan. However, Harlequins, the most successful and oldest club in Cork, will surely have say in the final outcome with their team of Tom Elliot, Dan Foley, Bertie Levinge and Fiona Higgins. I'm sure West Cork can get into the running also with their team of David Hayes, Alan Hurley, Owen Kelly, John Murphy, Donal O'Leary and Darren Buttimer. Or will the young guns form Ballincollig be a match for the older players with their team of David Buckley, Mike Spitere, Eoin Hegarty and Killilan Healy. The holders, Beech Hill A will also come into the reckoning with Milos Soukup, Anna D'Arcy, Louise Long, and Philip Shaw in their squad.
In Division two UCC B have made a great start with their team including Gus Coughlan, Derek O'Rourke, Paul Donovan, Claire Quinlan, Maria O'Sullivan, Jenna Mehigan-Collins, John Cuff and Mark Condron. Also going well are new boys Thurles with their team of Denis Mullane, Paddy Kennedy, Conan O'Hara, John Costello and Gearoid Neville. I'm sure Beech Hill B can get into the running also with their team of Stuart Shellard, Katie McSweeney, Claire O'Callaghan, Kim Yap and Barry Condron. West Cork could be the dark horses here with their team of Victor Anderson, Ivan Shorten, Ivan Camier, Jack Smiles, Vicky Ridgeway, Emma Jane Helen and Ina Shorten. Beech Hill C will also need to be considered with Terence McSweeney, Hayley Collins, Anna Kelly and Ludovic Martin in their squad.
League Secretary Tom Elliot who has been an affiliated member for 40 years doesn't have just the League to worry about! Look out for Tom's very talented daughter in the RTE Finals of You're A Star. Lets hope all your friends in table tennis will vote to get her into the finals.
