The Beech Tree

The Beech tree is a massive forest tree that can grow 40 metres high, live 300 years and has an abundance of small green leaves on a multitude of slender twigs. The leaves turn amber in autumn. It belongs to the Fagaceae family, which also includes the Oak and the Chestnut. It is a deciduous tree; that is , the leaves fall in autumn.

Beech wood is used for chair making and for making tools. The Beech has a place in legend, history and superstition. Joan of Arc is supposed to have seen visions while sitting under a beech tree. A famous 16th century herbalist named Gerard warned his readers against taking the leaves into the house in case they brought death with them.
