THE RIVER NANNY

The River Nanny is a tributary of the River Clare. It starts in Aghlora about 3 miles outside Tuam. The water from the river was used to power the mill in Tuam. After World War 2 the water was drained from the river Nanny. The river Nanny meets the river Clare at the Weir bridge. An improvement was noted in the lower Nanny due to the redirection of Tuam sewage to a new sewage treatment works. This is the first improvement in the water quality of the Nanny since surveys began in 1971. Further Improvement is expected as older deposits are flushed out of the river and further piping of effluents to the sewage treatment works. The river Nanny is not used for anything now but still is well known for its help in the running of the Tuam Mill.
