Training & Developement

In recent years white-water freestyle has emerged as possibly the most dynamic canoeing discipline. Across the planet Irish paddlers are turning heads as the standard continues to rise. Back home, more and more paddlers are squeezing into small boats and having lots more fun on the river. Our job is to ensure this enthusiasm towards freestyle paddling continues and increases, and to encourage good technique through coaching, so that Irish white-water paddlers can continue to make an impression on the international stage. Last season saw some excellent work by Brian Smith resulting in a huge increase in the numbers of juniors getting out there and giving the competitions a go. This season we hope to focus on the men's sport and ladies categories, while maintaining the momentum with the juniors.

While much of the attraction of white-water boating lies in its worldwide character, like many things, it all starts at home. On cold, wet Saturday mornings paddlers across the country are getting on the river and having a crack at the many moves that new boat designs have made possible. Our message to you - keep it up! Lets have people trying new things and improving their skills. Come to the various coaching days that we'll be running through the coming season. Sign up for some of the increasing number of playboating courses being run by instructors and outdoor centres. Take part in the competitions and events across the country, and watch your skills improve!

So there you have it people, keep an eye on the website for upcoming events. And remember, it's all about getting out there and getting your hair wet, throwing some big moves and taking some big hits!
