Smith, Prometheus Books, 1989 : Excellent introduction to the rational argument against the existence of God, with special attention given to the absurdities of Christian belief.Why I am not a Christian, Bertrand Russell, Routledge, 1996 : A collection of essays and lectures concerning atheism, morality, mortality and the dangers of religion. Russell, for those who do not know, was one of the most influential logicians in modern times.
Ken' guide to the Bible, Ken Smith, Blast Books, 1995 : Described as "The World's most complete compendium of the Bible's most embarrassing passages", this book is a humorous look at the contradictions, weirdness and downright savagery contained in the "Good Book".An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion, Brian Davies, Oxford University Press, 1993 : Arguments for the existence of God by a Dominican theologist. Always worth hearing the other side of the argument, no matter how wrong it is.

Excellent.The James Randi Educational Foundation : James Randi is an illusionist and skeptic who has dedicated his time to exposing psychic frauds such as Uri Geller. His foundation offers over one million dollars to anyone who can demonstrate a truly supernatural occurrence under scientific conditions. No one's done it yet...

The end of time, Damian Thompson, Minerva, 1997 : A skeptical account of the numerous, often religious based, world-wide beliefs concerning the end of the world at the turn of the millennium.The Fortean Times book of the Millennium, Kevin McClure, John Brown Publishing, 1996 : This book takes a critical look at the various beliefs and predictions made by groups and individuals concerning the year 2000.

A brief history of time (updated & expanded edition), Stephen Hawking, Bantam Press, 1996 : Fairly comprehensive (but sometimes poorly written) account of the theories of physics concerning the origin and nature of the Universe. This edition contains many new illustrations and, more importantly, new chapters concerning the modern "no boundary" model of the big bang.In search of Schrödinger's Cat, John Gribbin, Black Swan, 1997 : Excellent account of quantum physics and it's implications concerning a description of reality.
The Emperor's new mind, Roger Penrose, Vintage Books, 1990 : Pretty heavy going exploration of quantum physics, consciousness and artificial intelligence. Quite technical in places.

Atheism and Agnosticism have been given different sections because they are very different things. (See Atheism V Agnosticism in the Assorted Texts). The Religion section is for information pertaining to specific religious beliefs or teachings, rather than the wider philosophies of theism and deism, which are dealt with in the Atheism and Agnosticism sections. I use the term skepticism in the everyday sense, i.e. not believing in something until there is evidence for it, as opposed to the classical definition of not believing in anything. Humanism speaks pretty much for itself. Rational Thought deals with logic, critical thinking etc.- the skills of argument and formulation of educated opinion. The Science section points to information about scientific discoveries and theories (especially concerning evolution, physics and cosmology) which help to explain many of the occurrences that theists wrongly ascribe to God.
